Abstract

Slavery in ancient Rome is important because slaves were imperative in the development of ancient Rome in the domestic, military and educational domains. Within these domains, there were various categories of slaves. In the domestic domain, slaves were responsible for manual labour in terms of menial jobs and specialized roles. In the the military domain, there were slaves categorized as volones, servitia castris or personal servants for the soldiers. In the education domain, there were intellectual slaves who were educated by their masters as well as those who were already educated and were tutors to their masters’ children.
